Five Song Playlist: Digable Planets Appreciation

There’s not much to say this about this week’s Five Song Playlist mainly because I’m still feeling the effects of the fun day that was Sunday at Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco. The free summer concert series is held in this beautiful, redwood-y park, and the first act of the season was the absolutely amazing Digable Planets. Apart from the fact that the trio and their song “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” are one of the major contributors of classic hip hop, they had this insane live band who made their show this incredible and kind of surreal experience. (Seriously, shout out to drummer Conrad Real and his unbelievable solos).

Also, hearing that iconic bass line for “Rebirth of Slick” in real life is just something I never imagined would be a thing that I’d experience. There’s something weird but good about seeing the silver-flecked hair of these older people performing music they made when they were young and unknowingly making history.

So, this week we have an all Digable playlist featuring five songs from their debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) (1993), that were also part of their setlist yesterday.

They do indeed be to rap what key be to lock (sorry, I had to).
